Middle level theory is similar to my philosophy of education. Is there any reason why a high school wouldn't benefit from functioning like an ideal middle school? What is different about that age group that requires a different approach?
Hmmm...take a look at Promising Futures (Google it or vist the MDOE website). It is the high school version of Bright Futures. Promising Futures is what Maine high schools should be about.
I heard that Skowhegan High School is going to teaming next year, that will be interesting to see if it catches on. In college, I had several semesters of "blocked education classes". There was a group of us who had the same classes all semester and our teachers worked collaboratively with us. It modeled team work as well as put you back in the shoes of middle school students who spend all their time with the same 20 kids!
I think that some of the ideas expressed for middle schools would work at any level. Some of the ideas would need to be geared at the needs of high school students--which ARE different because of social and developmental differences. Overall, I think the concepts would work for any level.
